DPD invests £1.2m in new Sheffield depot
Parcel firm DPD has invested £1.2m in a new state-of-the-art depot on the Smithy Wood Industrial Estate in Sheffield.
The new depot replaces DPD’s Chapeltown depot and Barnsley satellite depot and is expected to generate a further five new jobs.
The new facility will increase DPD’s capacity to handle a significant increase in B2C parcel volumes generated by its hugely successful one-hour timeslot delivery service, Predict.
The new purpose built 36,000 sq ft depot, located at Cowley Way, Smithy Wood Industrial Estate, Sheffield, covers a 3.3 acre site and has been fitted out with the latest sorter technology which is capable of sorting 3,500 parcels an hour.

“The popularity of our Predict service helped us win over £70m of new business from online retailers last year and we will continue to plough that back into the business to ensure our technology, infrastructure and service are the best in the market.
“Our business has been expanding rapidly in the Sheffield area. We had already outgrown our Chapeltown depot and have been looking for a new home for some time.
“Our new purpose built depot gives us a huge advantage in terms of location and sorter technology, meaning we can increase the number of parcels we handle and service more routes cost effectively.
“This scale of investment in infrastructure, technology and people is key to ensuring that we continue to provide top quality service to customers now and in the future.”
In November 2012 DPD announced a £175m UK expansion programme which includes the construction of 10 new depots over the next 15 months. Other investments include the replacement of all the handheld devices used by drivers for route optimisation and parcel administration and ongoing investment in security and IT upgrades.
